Based on the Science of Reading, Pinwheels incorporates all areas of language arts and includes unique step-by-step lessons that are engaging and multisensory.

Pinwheels Year 1 Grade Level: U.S. Kindergarten ages 5-6
Pinwheels Year 2 Grade Level:  U.S. 1st Grade ages 6-7

Pinwheels is also appropriate for use with older learners who struggle.

Year 1 is appropriate for the learner who:

  • is new to reading, writing, and spelling
  • does not know the primary sounds of all letters
  • does not know most short vowel sounds
  • cannot read and spell most simple three-sound words

Year 2 is appropriate for the learner who:

  • can read and write most letters and say their primary sounds
  • can read and spell simple words with short vowel sounds
  • does not write and spell words with blends or multiple syllables
  • cannot spell with Silent-E and basic vowel teams

Review lessons are built into Year 2 for key concepts taught in Year 1.
