I am a speech-language pathologist who has been practicing for over 30 years. I work in my private practice primarily with traditional and home school children who struggle in language arts, primarily in reading and writing. I specialize in working with children with dyslexia and dysgraphia, but over the years, I have accumulated a lot of ideas and strategies for non-struggling learners as well.
In this blog, we will be addressing ways to teach reading and writing to children, using ideas to help them improve their underlying language skills. We will apply these ideas to helping children improve their schoolwork in language arts. We are particularly interested in writing, including handwriting, spelling, composition, and creative expression.
I am the creator of a literacy program called Wand, which is a spelling, grammar, and writing program for young readers. You can learn more about Wand (and now our Pinwheels comprehensive early literacy curriculum) in our shop.
I believe it is important for parents to know what the research says about different methods of learning, so I hope to be a resource that is both enlightening and encouraging.
